AARP and library sponsoring tax help

The National Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the San Marcos Public Library, 625 East Hopkins, are co-sponsoring free income tax assistance again beginning on Feb. 1.

Volunteers from AARP will be at the library on Mondays from 3-6 p.m.  and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to assist low-income, handicapped and the elderly ill make sense of their tax returns.

The program, which will continue through April 12, is coordinated by Powell Hinson.

The volunteer tax counselors have received special training from the IRS and are qualified to work on the 1040, 1040A and 1040 EZ forms as well as some specialized tax schedules.

Those wanting to take advantage of this free service need to bring photo ID, a social security card for all dependents, a copy of last year’s income tax return, property tax receipt, W-2 forms, statements regarding pensions, annuities, interest, dividends, IRA contributions, self-employment earning and expenses, disability statements, child care provider information and any 1099 forms.

E-Filing will be available. If participants wish to get their refund directly deposited into their bank account, a bank routing number and account number will be needed.
