CORPUS CHRISTI — The Texas State women’s basketball team was on its way to the first Southland Conference win of the season, but a lead that was held throughout the entire game was erased in the final three minutes of the game and the Bobcats fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Saturday night at the American Bank Center.
Texas State falls to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in league play, while A&M-Corpus Christi improves to 10-5 and 2-0, respectively.
Victoria Davis led the Bobcats with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field. Diamond Ford chipped in 14 points and Chika Ofoegbu finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season.
For the game, Texas State shot 46 percent and went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc for a 63 percent effort. The Bobcats went 17-for-25 from the free throw line.
Five minutes into tonight’s decision, A&M-Corpus Christi held a 10-1 lead over Texas State, but within two minutes, the Bobcats chipped away at the margin to tie the game. Aggressive play and scoring went back-and-forth between the teams and at the 7:40 mark, a fast break layup from Victoria Davis followed by a long three-pointer from Kelsey Krupa gave Texas State a 26-22 advantage.
A pair of Islander layups and two shots from the free throw line countered a jumper in the paint from Lacey Klause to bring AMCC within one point, but Davis nailed a three heading into a media timeout to keep Texas State on top.
A 7-5 run by A&M-Corpus Christi closed out the half, but Texas State maintained the lead with a 37-35 score.
A close game ensued out of the half that saw three ties and three lead changes with neither team holding more than a six-point lead.
At 8:43, Ford gave Texas State a 53-50 edge, but J. Davis mimicked the shot to reign in the Bobcats. V. Davis answered with a driving jumper, but J. Davis was there for her team again with a clutch three-pointer. Alayup from Adrienne Scott followed to give the Islanders their first lead since the 10-minute mark in the first half.
The momentum surged back into Texas State’s court at 4:48 when Kelsey Krupa drained a three-pointer. Shaye Montgomery kept the pace with a three of her own and Ford chipped in with the third-straight trey for a 68-64 lead.
The battle behind the arc continued but with little input from the Bobcats as back-to-back three-pointers coupled with a layup from the Islanders put the team ahead 72-68. AMCC closed out scoring with a 6-4 run to seal the win.
J. Davis led the Islanders with 30 points on a 7-of-20 shooting effort. Scott and Elisa Beagle recorded double-doubles to aid the win.
Texas State will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they face Central Arkansas. Tip against the Sugar Bears is set for 2 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
