Bobcats avenge SMU hoops loss


The Texas State Bobcats reached a high point in their men’s basketball season Saturday with a 91-86 win against Southern Methodist University at Strahan Coliseum.

The Mustangs defeated Texas State, 94-86, on Dec. 7 in Dallas.

The Bobcats jumped to a 19-3 lead in the first four minutes Saturday and maintained a 45-27 advantage at halftime. During the first half, the Bobcats made 16 of 28 field goal attempts (57.1 percent), including their first seven shots. The Bobcats built much of their advantage in the first half from three-point range, making six of 11 threes, compared with one of eight for SMU.

Though SMU made it close at the end, Texas State led comfortably throughout the second half. The Bobcats held a 71-56 lead with 6:39 left in the game, and still led, 89-79, with 40 seconds left.

John Rybak led the Bobcats with 23 points, hitting five of eight threes. Dylan Hale (14 points), Cameron Johnson (11), Ryan White (10) and Tony Bishop (10) also hit double figures for the Bobcats.

Derek Williams of SMU led all scorers with 29 points, followed by 16 points from Paul McCoy.

Texas State improved to 5-8 with its next game coming Tuesday against Panhandle State at Strahan Coliseum (7 p.m.). SMU falls to 5-7.
