The teens of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas Keystone Club were recently presented with a check for $25,000 from Walmart at the Annual Walmart Feeds Families Thanksgiving Luncheon at the Club, 400 Uhland Road in San Marcos.

Boys & Girls Club Board Volunteer Terry Yancey and Walmart management team member Laura Liggett were on hand to make the presentation

Daphne McDole, Business and Community Development Coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas, said, “The Keystone Club teens were awarded $25,000.00 because Walmart believes in supporting families, education and communities.  The membership fee for the Boys & Girls Clubs is $35.00 per year.  Without support from corporations like Walmart, the fees would be much higher.”

Keystone Clubs are chartered small-group character and leadership clubs for teens ages 14-18.  The goal of Keystoning is to help teens develop an understanding and appreciation of ethical standards as they develop leadership skills.  Teens run their own meetings, elect officers and plan and implement their own activities.  Leadership activities may include team building, teen-run workshops on ethical leadership, public speaking, and debate training.

Teens also receive tutoring and academic reinforcement as well as test preparation skills and motivational activities. Additionally they are given academic, career and personal counseling. Enhanced computer application skills, preparation for success in college, social skills enhancement and information about financial aid, scholarships, and college admissions are also part of the program.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas provide afterschool programs Monday through Friday from 3 p.m.– 6:30 p.m.  The Keystone Club hosts workshops every first and third Saturday from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Uhland Road location.
