Six San Marcos High School (SMHS) students are moving on to the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) regional competition later this month after qualifying through a recent district competition.

The winning students are second sopranos Kay Whitbeck and Abby Bowers, second basses Gabe Deleon and Sam Heaton, first tenor Dwaylon Applewhite and first bass Hunter Voyles.

“I was extremely proud of all the choir kids who came and worked,” SMHS Choral Director Helen Miers said. “They were great and everyone was so impressed with their polite behavior and willingness to help.”

Each year, the TMEA conducts high school auditions to create district Texas choirs, orchestras and bands. The district musicians compete to be regional winners. The regional winners then compete to be a part of the All-Area group, which is eventually refined to an All-State choir or band. Student musicians selected for an All-State group are invited to attend the annual TMEA convention, where they participate in a performance clinic and concert.

SMHS students auditioned for the TMEA district choir. They competed with students from Pflugerville ISD, Austin ISD, Bastrop ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Lockhart ISD, Hayes CISD, as well as private high schools in Austin, Pflugerville, Dripping Springs, and Wimberley. In all, there were 600 students in competition.
