STAFF REPORT
San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz recently issued a proclamation naming July as “Early Literacy Month,” in support of the “Success by 6” (SB6) initiative and book drive.
The book drive is sponsored by the United Way of Hays County, Texas State, San Marcos CISD (SMCISD), Seeking Opportunities, Achieving Results (SOAR), the San Marcos Education Foundation (SMEF), the San Marcos Library, the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce (SMACC) and the San Marcos Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
The drive seeks to collect 1,000 books in both English and Spanish for children aged 0-6. Collection bins can be found at the SMACC office, the SMCISD office, the first floor of Texas State’s J.C. Kellam building and other local churches and businesses
The books will then be distributed in bags donated by Butler Manufacturing and Gary Job Corps to students in Head Start and other early childhood education programs.
