Kyle United Methodist VBS donates to CASA

Vacation Bible School students pose with their donations to CASA of Central Texas.

Students at Kyle United Methodist Church’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) recently donated socks, books, toys and money to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Central Texas.

CASA of Central Texas advocates for abused and neglected children in the court system. They recruit and support community volunteers, and act as the eyes and ears of the Child Protection Services Judge. In 2008, CASA of Central Texas served 86 children in Hays County.

“We have children who enter care without much, sometimes any, of their clothing,” CASA Community Relations Coordinator Eloise Hudson said. “Clean socks are something that many children take for granted, so it was encouraging to see them realize just how little some children have. They also brought coloring books, which will be given to children while they are sitting in court waiting, sometimes for hours.”

The students also earned money for CASA’s Special Needs Fund, which is an account used to only pay for things like tutoring, after school activities fees and glasses.

“When talking to the children, I tried to express that the most important thing they could do is remember that there are children out there that are less fortunate, but that does not mean they are any less of a person,” Hudson said. “Sometimes the most important thing to the children we serve is just to feel normal, and I hope these children realize the easiest and best thing they could do is just be a friend.”
