Junior high jumper Katherine Evans and senior shot putter Kemuel Morales will represent Texas State at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships Wednesday through Saturday in Fayetteville, AK.
Morales qualified for the championships with a season-best throw of 18.23 meters (59-09.75) at the Midwest Regional at the University of Oklahoma. His mark earned him a bronze medal in the event. Morales has exceeded 18 meters many times this season.
“I am excited about championships, but I’m being patient,” said Morales. “This was my goal the whole year. I am mentally there. I don’t feel any pressure since I’m not at the top of the list, even though I know I can be up there with the rest. Hopefully, I can go out there and get a good mark and become an All-American.”
Evans tied for 10th at the Midwest Regional in the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters (5-07). She took third place in the high jump at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, where she had a season-best jump of 1.81 meters (5-11.25).
The Bobcats are represented at the national meet for the first time since 2007. The qualifying round of the men’s shot put will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m. The women’s high jump qualifying round will begin Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
The men’s shot put finals are scheduled for Thursday, with the women’s high jump finals on Friday.
