On the eve of their first appearance in the NCAA baseball tournament since 2000, the Texas State Bobcats received their first All-American honors ever from Collegiate Baseball, a newspaper that covers the sport.

Right hander Kane Holbrooks, 10-1 with a 3.34 ERA as Texas State’s ace starting pitcher, was named to the second team. The senior has 56 strikeouts in 94 1/3 innings.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt won third team honors with his season of 17 homers and 85 RBI entering Friday’s NCAA Tournament opener at the University of Texas’ Disch Falk Field. The junior slugger is the all-time Texas State home run hitter with 35 in his three-year career.

The Bobcats (41-15) are the second-seeded team in the Austin Regional. They open against third-seeded Boston College (33-24) at 1 p.m. Top-seeded Texas (41-13-1) will play fourth-seeded Army (34-19) at 6 p.m.

The Bobcats are hitting .336 as a team. Every hitter in the starting lineup is batting .300 or better. Outfielder/designated hitter Spenser Dennis leads all batters with a .408 average. Texas State is making its fourth NCAA tournament appearance and its first since 2000.

Boston College is making its tenth NCAA tournament appearance and its first since 1967. The top hitters for Boston College are Robbie Anston (.358, 21 doubles), Tony Sanchez (.355) and Mickey Wiswall (14 home runs).

Friday’s scheduled starting pitcher for Boston College, JB McDonald, is 5-7 with a 4.70 ERA. The Bobcats will counter with Holbrooks on the mound.
