Broadway vet joins Texas State musical theater faculty

Robin Lewis, a veteran of many Broadway productions, will join the faculty of Texas State’s Musical Theater Program on a per-course basis. He will teach musical theater dance.

Lewis will join recent musical theater faculty additions Katlin Hopkins and Jim Price

“In assembling the musical theater faculty, I think Robin is the perfect complement to Kaitlin and Jim,” said Texas State Department of Theater and Dance Chair John Fleming. “As a dancer and dance captain, Robin has worked with some of Broadway’s most acclaimed directors and choreographers (Susan Stroman, Ann Reinking). The addition of Robin to our program means that our students will receive top-level musical theater dance training.”

Lewis has performed in several Broadway stage productions, including as dance captain for Disney’s Beauty & the Beast and A Christmas Carol. He has also appeared in both the stage and screen versions of Fosse, and played in the Off-Broadway production of The Green Heart. Lewis has also preformed in the first national Broadway touring production on Mel Brooks’ The Producers, which starred Jason Alexander and Martin Short.

Lewis has choreographed for the Oklahoma Lyric Opera, the Zachary Scott Theater Center, Zilker Productions and TexARTS. He was voted “Best in Austin” for his choreography and “Keeper of the Fosse Flame” by the Austin Chronicle. He has won multiple B. Iden Payne and Austin Critics’ Circle Awards.

“When I was asked to head the Musical Theater Program at Texas State, I could see we had the support to do things a little outside the box and could explore new and innovative ways to train young theater artists to enter the professional world,” Hopkins said. “The addition of Robin Lewis to our team crystallizes that vision.”

Said Lewis, “It just makes sense that the State of Texas – with such an abundance of talented young people – should have a nationally-recognized university program for musical theater. Having been able to share my love and passion for musical theater on Broadway and elsewhere, it’s now such a thrill to be able to give back and share what I know with the next generations of performers here at Texas State.”

Lewis has taught at the University of Texas and Saint Edwards University. He has served as a guest lecturer for the American Ballet Theater Summer Intensives, Ballet Austin, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Oklahoma University, Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, Camp Broadway in NYC, U.S. Performing Arts Camp and others nationwide. He has also been a guest teacher for, and holds membership with, the Musical Theater Educators Alliance and the Texas Educational Theater Association among others. He is also a member of Actor’s Equity.

“Combined, Kaitlin, Jim, and Robin have over 60 years of professional experience, and it is exciting to see their commitment to building a first-rate program that trains the next generation of musical theater performers,” Fleming said. “For all three of them, it’s about the students and how can we best prepare them for the profession.”

  1. What a fantastic coup for Texas State and San Marcos. Texas State is doing what UT did in the 70s when they brought a group greaqt opeara singers to UT to teach opera, while they didnot have degrees (My dad included), they produced a legion of singers many of them who have had great careers. Robin is one heck of a dancer and is a wonderful teacher. Texas State is a rising program and this is sure to raise the Star even higher. WOW.
