National Marrow Donor Program director to speak at Texas State

Dr. Jeffery Chell

Texas State will welcome Dr. Jeffery Chell, CEO of the National Marrow Donor Program, as part of its Cancer Awareness Month events, on April 15.

Chell will present a talk called, “Be the Match: Blood and Marrow transplants,” will be held in the eleventh floor of the J.C. Kellam building, at 7 p.m. The speech will focus on recruiting donors for the national registry, than can be called upon to help a patient in need.

Each year, more than 35,000 people are diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases, and a donation of marrow or stem cells could be the only chance for their survival.

Anyone between the ages of 18-60 who are in general good health can join the registry. It is estimated that there are 6,000 people every day who are waiting on a suitable match, but only four in ten patients are able to locate that match.

A reception will precede the speech at 6:15 p.m. All activities are free and open to the public. For more information, visit this website.
