SMHS bands win superior ratings

The SMHS Symphonic and Honor bands.

The San Marcos High School (SMHS) Symphonic and Honor bands earned superior ratings at the recent University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 18 Concert and Sight Reading Contest.

Both bands earned a “Sweepstakes B” trophy for first Division Superior ratings in both categories. The non-varsity Symphonic Band, under the direction of Damon Knight, earned a unanimous first division score from all three judges, and a Division I rating in Sight Reading.

Additionally, the varsity Honor Band, with Kelly Rushfeldt directing, won a unanimous first division score from all three judges in Sight Reading. According to both directors, the students cheers, “..could be heard for miles around.”

“It has been a long time coming, and well worth the effort,” said Knight.

Said Rushfeldt, “It was been many years since both bands received this rating in the same year. Parents and teachers, please congratulate your students for a job very well done. The Rattler band is a force to be reckoned with in Region 18.”

  1. These kids are special. Way to go, guys! And the Band Directors are committed teachers and outstanding mentors.
They are underpaid and overworked and love what they do. Thanks to Mr. Rushfeldt, Mr. Knight and Mr. Holland for all you do.
