The San Marcos High School Color Guard.
San Marcos High School’s (SMHS) Color Guard brought home several awards from the Marching Auxiliaries competition, held at Champion High School in Boerne on March 14.
The guard won the Best in Class award, a Superior Rating award and the Choreography Award. This was its first competition of the year. The team, known as the “Sport of the Arts” according to Color Guard Director Tami Klett, uses flags along with dance to add visual effects to SMHS’ marching band.
In the fall the guard performs with the band, while in the spring they compete in auxiliary competitions.
“SMHS has not had a color guard team in years,” said Klett, “and this is a great start to a new tradition. We are grateful to Kelly Rushfeldt, the high school arching band director, for implementing the addition of the color guard to the band.”
The SMHS Color Guard consists of Team Captain Angela Villegas, Brittany Basham, Ebony Brown, Jade Chavez, Melanie Gonzales, Emily Lombardo and Alisen Webster.
The color guard will hold a spring show on May 15, at 6:30 p.m., in the SMHS auditorium, where it will show off its award-winning moves.
