Texas State qualifies two for track regional


Two Texas State athletes posted NCAA regional qualifying marks during the weekend at the 2009 Dr. Pepper Invitational in Waco.

Valerie Hancock won the women’s high jump with an NCAA regional height of 1.75 meters. Kemuel Morales won the men’s shot put with a regional mark of 17.52 meters.

The women’s team placed three in the top ten in the 100-meter dash. Iris Darrington took second with a time of 12.16 seconds, Renee Sheppard was sixth with 12.45 and Morgan Canty was 10th in a time of 12.61. Darrington returned to the track to win the 200-meters in a time of 24.79.

Also for the Texas State women, Lindsey Maxwell took fourth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:18.70, Stephanie Armstrong recorded a time of 4:55.83 in the 1,500 meters, Hancock placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.71 and Cailey Olson was fifth in that race with a time of 15.17.

The Bobcats took four of the top five spots in the 400-meter hurdles, led by winner Liat Anav in a time of 1:02.60. Mary Beth O’Connor took second with a time of 1:03.75. Rachel Harville and Katie Miller took fourth and fifth with times of 1:04.53 and 1:04.60.

Katie Evans took second to Hancock’s victorious performance in the high jump with a height of 1.70m (5-07), while Asiya Iskakova was third with 1.65m (5-05). Iskakova also placed second in the long jump with a mark of 5.83m (19-01.50). Sara Olayiwola won the triple with a distance of 12.19m (40-00). In the hammer, throw Kelli Van Vleet had a mark of 44.99m (147-07) for second and Jiovanna Martinez was third with a mark of 42.72m (140-02).

On the men’s side for Texas State, Stefon Hargrove took fourth in the 100-meters with 10.87. Brandon Thomas was third in the 200-meters with a time of 22.07. Dino Buchanan recorded a time of 48.75 in the 400-meters good enough for seventh place. Clay Holland won the 100-hurdles in a time of 14.57. Holland also placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.53.

In the pole vault, Eric Williams placed second with a height of 4.90m (16-00.75). Dimitri Kabakov grabbed third.

Ben Marvin placed second in the long jump with a mark of 7.01m (23-00). Brett Berry was third with a mark of 7.00m (22-11.75). Collins Ekeocha had a distance of 6.68m (21-11) for fourth place.

Andy Ysebaert took third in the discus with a throw of 48.26m (158-04). Daniel Schmidt placed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.70m (166-04).
