Texas State University police are investigating an apparent drowning that occurred in the San Marcos River at Sewell Park on the Texas State campus on Friday afternoon, March 20.
According to statements collected by police, an off-duty employee of the university’s Office of Campus Recreation observed a male swimming in the river between the two Sewell Park bridges. When he looked again a moment later, he did not see the swimmer. He then saw an individual on the bottom of the river, entered the water and pulled the victim to shore and began resuscitation efforts.
University police received two calls to the campus 911 dispatcher at approximately 2:31 p.m., and EMS arrived on the scene at 2:33. Further attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Central Texas Medical Center at 4 p.m.
The unidentified victim is described as a male, approximately 20 years of age. The victim’s identity will be released upon verification and notification of next of kin.
