HOG rally coming to San Marcos

San Marcos will welcome more than 7,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts for the annual Harley Owners Group (HOG) rally, held from Sept. 24-26, at the Hays County Civic Center.

“The City of San Marcos is delighted to host the Texas State HOG Rally in 2009,” said San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz. “This event will involve activities in many locations in San Marcos, including downtown, the civic center, Embassy Suites, and with the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). This will have significant economic benefits to the citizens of San Marcos.”

Organizers say this will be the biggest year yet for the rally because of lower registration costs. It is believed this rally will beat the previous record of 7,000 attendees, set in 2008.

“The annual three-day Texas state HOG Rally is the largest factory-sponsored motorcycle event held in the state, and was voted the Best Club Event in Texas for 2008 by readers of Ride Texas Magazine,” said rally coordinator Kate Perry. It gives our members an opportunity to renew friendships, and spend a few days doing what we like to do best – ride together on our Harleys.”

Events for the rally include a bike show, tests of riding abilities, games and other on-site activities. The rally will wrap up with a Saturday night concert by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, best known for their hit 1982 cover of the Arrows’ “I Love Rock ‘n Roll.”

Said Perry, “The best part is the riding. We have some great rides planned through the Texas Hill Country with some incredible views. Even those Harley owners who aren’t members will come out for this event. It’s incredibly easy to join HOG on the spot and join us on the rides. We also hold a big parade on the final day of our rally every year, so the public can come out to see all the Harleys and share the excitement.”

HOG boasts more than a million members worldwide, with more than 60,000 in Texas. HOG chapters are sponsored by Harley-Davidson dealers, and most hold monthly meetings and participate in fundraising activities throughout Texas.
