Bobcats fall into first place tie with Nicholls


The Texas State softball team scored more runs than Nicholls State in a three-game series this week, but Nicholls State won more games.

Nicholls State won two of three, bringing itself into a first-place tie with Texas State in the Southland Conference at 11-4 in the league.

The Bobcats won the opener of a Tuesday double header in Thibodeaux, 5-1. Ryan Kos hit a solo homer and Leah Boatright chipped in with a three-run double to support pitcher Chandler Hall, who won her sixth straight decision and upped her record to 12-4.

Nicholls State won the second game in that double header, 2-0, scoring single runs in the first and third innings. Each team managed only three hits.

Nicholls State prevailed, 2-1, in Wednesday’s rubber game. Hall pitched all seven innings, striking out seven and facing only 24 batters. However, she took the loss for the first time in seven decisions, falling to 12-5.

The Bobcats scored the first run of the game when McKenzie Baack doubled in the first inning after the first two Texas State hitters reached on errors. Alex Newton scored on Baack’s blast to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

However, Nicholls State scored two runs and won the game in the sixth inning on a two-run double my Lyndsay Mesh.

The Bobcats dropped to 19-11 overall and 11-4 in the Southland Conference. Nicholls State now is 21-11 and 11-4.

Texas State returns home this weekend for three games against Central Arkansas. The teams will play a double header Saturday and a single game Sunday.
