Barbershop contest coming to San Marcos

The Heart of Texas Chorus (HTC) will hold a  barbershop quartet competition and convention on March 20-21, in Evans Auditorium on the Texas State campus.

The competition will feature some of the premier quartets and choruses in the Southwestern United States. They will compete for a chance to go to the Barbershop Harmony Society’s (BHS) International Convention and Contest, held in Anaheim, CA, in July.

According to the BHS, Barbershop is characterized as, “…music (featuring) songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies, whose tones clearly define a tonal center.”

San Marcos is well represented in the competition. Two new quartets from Texas State, Pleasant Street and Varsity, will compete, along with the Marcsmen, who were named champions at the 2008 International Youth Chorus Festival and took ninth place in the 2008 International Chorus Competition.

On March 21, a “Show of Champions,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Auditorium. Winners of the College Barbershop Quartet Contest, Genesis, will perform, along with 2007 Southwestern District Champions Glory Days, The Marcsmen, and the HTC.

Tickets for the “Show of Champions” will be $15 in advance, and $20 at the door. They are available at the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce (SMACC), located at 202 North C.M. Allen Parkway.

The weekend events were made possible by a grant from the San Marcos Art Commission. For more information, contact John Worthington at (210) 476-4747, or at this email address. The HTC website can be found by clicking here.
