Riding on full-court pressure defense in the second half, the Hays Rebels advanced to the third round of the Class 4A girls high school basketball playoffs Friday night with a 60-43 win against Beaumont Ozen in Bryan.
Though they couldn’t shake Ozen in the first half and went to intermission in a 25-25 tie, the Rebels (31-4) demonstrated clear superiority in the second half, forcing 19 turnovers. Because Ozen couldn’t score, Ozen also couldn’t apply its own full-court pressure defense.
The Rebels took advantage, putting up an 18-5 run in the third quarter for a 43-30 lead going to the final eight minutes.
The win put Hays into the third round against District 17-4A foe Manor Tuesday night at a site yet to be decided. The Rebels beat Manor twice during the regular season.
Angeleigh Davis led Hays with 12 points, followed by E.J. Joyner with 11. Shelby Calabrese and Paige Lord each scored eight points for the Rebels. Ozen finished the season 22-11.
Hays last beat Manor, 45-35, on Jan. 28.
The winner of the game between Hays and Manor will play the winner between Houston Yates and Bay City in the first round of the Region III tournament to be played Feb. 27-28 at Coleman Coliseum in Spring Branch.
The Rebels are ranked 15th statewide in Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and 12th statewide by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
