All’s well that ends well, perhaps. The boys basketball team at San Marcos will certainly take the way its regular season ended Tuesday night.
The Rattlers did what no team in District 17-4A has been able to do this year, beating Del Valle, 52-51, on the road. Del Valle already clinched the district title with a win last Friday against Manor, but couldn’t take its run of fortune all the way to the district finish line against the Rattlers.
San Marcos took leads of 12-6 after the first quarter and 24-17 at half. Del Valle closed to within striking range in the second half. However, unlike other occasions in which the Cardinals came from behind this year, then couldn’t finish that job Tuesday night.
Cameron Austin of San Marcos led all scorers with 21 points. The Rattlers held Del Valle star Rodney Lee to four points. Lee scored 19 when the two teams played in San Marcos on Jan. 23. Jozef Cortez led Del Valle with 11 points Tuesday night.
The Rattlers finish the regular season 22-10 overall and 8-4 in the district, good for third place. Del Valle ends its regular season 23-9 and 11-1.
The Hays Rebels finished their regular season with a measure of frustration, while the Lehman Lobos finished their with a measure of frustration. Hays beat Lehman, 56-49, Tuesday night at Oran Bales Gymnasium.
The Rebels, diminished by injuries this season, won their last two games of the season to finish 16-15 overall and 4-8 in District 17-4A. Lehman, which wasn’t knocked out of the playoff race until last week, finishes the season 14-16 and 4-8.
Trailing, 30-28, at halftime, the Rebels put up a 16-8 third quarter and held firm for the rest of the game.
Ed Franco led Hays with 19 points, followed by Vince Sorrells with 16.
