The women’s softball team at Texas State will open its newly renovated Bobcat Field Wednesday night after a successful batch of games against top opponents with the state.
Last Saturday, the Bobcats beat 14th-ranked Houston, 2-0, to close out the Houston Marriott Plaza Classic at Cougar Softball Stadium. Last Wednesday, the Bobcats beat Texas, 9-6, at McCombs Field in Austin.
The win against Houston brought the Bobcats up to 5-4 this year, while dropping Houston to 4-3. Chandler Hall notched her second win of the tournament by pitching seven innings and giving up only two hits while striking out seven.
The Bobcats scored a run in the second when Taylor Hall drove in Kristina Tello with a single, then added insurance in the fifth when Tello singled in pinch runner Tamara Keller.
Offense carried the Bobcats against Texas as six of them drove in runs. In a balanced effort, Allyce Rother led the way, going two-for-two with two runs scored.
The Bobcats came from behind with six runs in the seventh for the win as the Longhorns issued three walks and a wild pitch while making a fielding error. All the runs came with two out.
With the bases loaded and two out as the Bobcats trailed, 6-5, Brittany Barnhill walked in the tying run. Next, Tello singled to right center that sent Rother and Ryan Kos sprinting home. Alex Newton followed with an RBI single.
The Bobcats will play their first home game of the season Wednesday against Texas A&M (6 p.m.).
