San Marcos school district officials say they are seeing a heartening number of students enrolled in a high school alternative program join a career training dual enrollment program being offered for the first time in conjunction with Gary Job Corps.
Nearly 25 percent of daytime students enrolled in the Pathfinder Learning Center program have also enrolled at Gary Job Corps in one of three technical training programs spanning 11 trade specifications, said Amy Lyles the learning center’s counselor. These study areas include Human Services and Information Technology, Construction and Manufacturing and Health Sciences.
“This program offers students a variety of job certifications in many fields. Graduates of this program may choose to enter the world of work immediately after graduation, or they may choose to continue their education at a college or university. The important thing to remember is that these students will have choices for successful, rewarding careers. We are very proud of the students who have decided to embark on this journey,” said Bee Flores, the Pathfinder Learning Center principal.
Upon completion of their certification and acquiring their high school diploma, the dual enrollment students are often offered internship positions and/or job placement assistance. While enrolled with Gary, they also have use of recreational facilities and medical services at the Gary Job Corps site.
