Former Houston Astros great Larry Dierker will be the featured speaker Saturday at the local meeting of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR).
The meeting of the Rogers Hornsby Chapter will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., taking place in Room 320 of the Old Main Building on the Texas State University campus.
The only charge for the meeting is $10 for lunch, which can be ordered before the meeting. The affair will include guest speakers, research presentations, a short trivia quiz and an exchange of baseball books.
Dierker made his major league debut for the Houston Colt .45s on September 22, 1964, his 18th birthday, striking out Willie Mays in the first inning. Dierker went on to become a rock in the Astros’ early years, winning 20 games in 1969 and tossing a no-hitter on July 9, 1976. He finished his career with a 139-123 record.
After working as a color commentator on the Astros’ radio and television broadcasts from 1979 through 1996, the Astros made the unusual move of taking him out of the broadcast booth and placing him in the dugout as the team’s manager. The idea worked beautifully for the Astros, who won the National League Central Division in four of his five years as manager.
After that run ended following the 2001 season, Dierker returned to the Astros broadcast booth on a sometimes basis, and he continues to work for the Astros as a community outreach executive.
