Hays CISD Channel: Lehman student to read essay at Austin Chamber

From Hays CISD

Victor Martinez, a senior at Lehman High School, will read his college scholarship application essay at the annual State of Education luncheon of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce on Dec. 9.

Martinez’ essay, “Tomorrow’s Future Rooted in Our Community,” won among a significant number of college/scholarship application essays by students of Bastrop, Del Valle, Manor, Dripping Springs, Eanes and Austin school districts.

“This is an amazing honor,” said Charlotte Winkelman, Hays CISD Director of Counseling and College Readiness, who submitted Martinez’ essay. “As in years past, the Chamber will hire someone to coach Victor how to read his essay to the public. The audience will include representatives from major universities and corporations, who will witness Victor’s work. There is a great deal of notoriety involved.”

Martinez, a semifinalist for National Merit Scholar, has also earned Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction for performance on his Advanced Placement exams.

Anthony O. Befi, vice president of High Performance Computing System Development and IBM Senior Location Executive for Texas, will be the keynote speaker at the Austin Chamber luncheon at the Frank Erwin Center.
