SMHS Choir stacks up the awards

San Marcos CISD Choral Director Helen Miers announced that the SMCISD choir has winners in two categories: the Texas Music Educators All-District/Region Choir Members (TMEA) and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Choir Members. The TMEA All-District/Region Mixed Choir Members recognized are: Kay Whitbeck, Josh Contreras, Jonathon Flores, Layne Cape, Madeline Bell, and Gabe DeLeon.

The All-District/Region Ladies Honor Choir members recognized are: Anna Rivas, Sarah Williams, and Pam House.

The District/Region Choir members presented in a concert this weekend, November 15, at the San Marcos High School Performing Arts Center, as the school hosted the Region 18 TMEA Clinic and Concert. The District/Region Mixed Choir continue on to the third round of the TMEA Pre-Area auditions on November 24 at Bowie High School in Austin, Texas. Miers says that if they place in the top five positions in each section, then students will audition one final time in San Antonio at the TMEA Area auditions for positions in the Texas TMEA All-State Choir. Miers says, “It is a long process, and the competition is fierce.”

National ACDA Choir members recognized include Sabrina Cano, Regan Keithly, and Gabe DeLeon. These students were selected from 1,500 students from all 50 states. The National ACDA choir members will travel to Oklahoma City in March 2009 to participate in the National Youth Choir and will be presented in concert before the National American Choral Directors’ Association Convention.
