Dominating Saturday night as they dominated all year in the Southland Conference, the Texas State volleyball team crushed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in three games Saturday night to end their league season with the league title.
The Bobcats won by scored of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-13 to end their year at 21-13 overall and 14-2 in the SLC.
The Bobcats beat Texas-San Antonio two days earlier in three games (25-15, 25-16, 25-17). Lamar, which began the week tied with Texas State in the loss column, lost one of its three matches during the week, opening the door for Texas State to clinch with a win Saturday night.
“I’m just so excited for our seniors,” Texas State coach Karen Chisum said. “They’ve been to the NCAA tournament, but not win the conference. We were picked to win it this year, and when you’re picked to win it, it puts a target on your back. But our kids fought through it.”
Said senior outside hitter Lawrencia Brown, “This is what we wanted since we started three-a-days. This is the best thing that’s happened in my four years.”
The Bobcats face one more hurdle on their way to this year’s NCAA Tournament. The automatic bid goes to the winner of the SLC Tournament, which takes place this weekend at Stephen F. Austin. It stands to be an especially large challenge because Texas State has knocked SFA out of the tournament the last two years.
“We have to win three more matches to do what we want to do,” Chisum said.
Jessica Weynand led all Bobcats with 12 kills and eight digs. Brown had seven kills and 15 digs, while Melinda Cave had nine kills. Emily Jones Wilkes led all players in blocks with six.
The last time the Bobcats won the regular season conference title and the conference tournament was 2004.
