San Marcos High School students cast vote in a mock election on Tuesday and correctly called the eventual winners for mayor, president and U.S. representative.

The 501 students participating in the exercise chose Barack Obama with 71 percent of the vote as U.S. president and re-elected congressman Lloyd Doggett and mayor Susan Narvaiz, although school officials did not release mock results for down-ballot races.

“While U.S. citizens across the country went to the polls to elect the next president, San Marcos High School student voted in the comfort of our own high school,” said Lacy Odam of the high school’s chapter of Junior State of America, which sponosored the election.

The high school library was open Tuesday night from until 9 p.m. for students to watch the national election results live. According to high school librarian Sandra Plumb, students brought their homework and “camped out” while watching the 2008 election unfold and participated in discussions.
