The San Marcos High School Chapter of Junior State of America (JSA) hosted an Election Day event on November 4, 2008, in the SMHS library. JSA sponsor Lacye Odam said, “While U.S. citizens across the country went to the polls to elect the next president, San Marcos High School student voted in the comfort of our own high school.” From 7:45 am through the last lunch period, 501 students filed into the library to cast their votes for local, state, and national leaders. The results were:
o President: Obama 71%, McCain 26%, Other 3%
o U.S. Senator: Noriega
o U.S. Representative: Doggett
o San Marcos Mayor: Narvaiz
Furthermore, the high school library was open Tuesday night from 6:30-9 pm for students to watch the national election results live. According to high school librarian Sandra Plumb, students brought their homework and “camped out” while watching the 2008 election unfold and participated in discussions.
