BROKEN ARROW, OK – The Texas State men’s golf team maintained its lead to claim the Bob Hurley Auto Oral Roberts Shootout title Tuesday afternoon. Corey Roberson won the tournament’s individual title after carding a four-under par 212.
“The guys played great this week,” Texas State head coach Shane Howell said. “I am really proud of the team. After a tough outing in New Mexico last week, they bounced back in a huge way.”
The Bobcats collected their first tournament victory of the season and their first title since Howell inherited the program this season. The Bobcats finished 20 strokes ahead of second-place Illinois State.
Roberson’s 75 Tuesday enabled him to hold onto first place after he fired rounds of 68 and 69 to start the tournament. The senior finished in the lead by five strokes.
“I can’t say enough good things about Corey Roberson’s play,” Howell said. “He just put on a heck of a performance this week.”
Jeff Gerlich (218) finished third for Texas State, jumping from seventh-place with a final one-under par round Tuesday. Texas State’s Carson Gibson (225) also saved his best for last, improving from 81 and 76 to card a team-best four-under par 68 to tie for 13th place. Texas State’s Michael Carnes (224) tied for eleventh after shooting a 76 and Guy Goodspeed (241) closed out the afternoon with an 80, shaving off five strokes from his second round score.
Sam Houston State’s Scott Kelly shot an even-par 72 to take second-place behind Roberson and Northern Illinois’ Max Hosking matched Gerlich’s 218 combined tally for the third-place tie.
SHSU and NIU finished tied for third-place at the ORU Shootout.
The Bobcats men’s golf team will take nearly a month off from the course before action commences Oct. 27-28 at the Texas-Arlington Waterchase Invitational in Fort Worth.
