Association announces new San Marcos High distinguished alumni


The San Marcos High School Alumni Association and the San Marcos Education Foundation are pleased to announce the 2008 San Marcos High School Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients.

Former Hays County Treasurer and political activist Dottie Payne Sims, ‘40; director of the Center for Migrant Education, Frank Contreras, ‘54; former president of Anheuser-Busch Entertainment Corporation John Roberts, ‘62; Central Texas  Realtor and developer  Randall Morris, ‘65;  Fulbright scholar and educator Liz Champagne Johnson, ‘69; national award-winning psychologist Melba Vasquez, ‘69; and CNN news anchor Cinnamon Linda Stouffer Staussman, ‘88.

The SMHS Distinguished Alumni Presentation and Reception  will kick off Rattler Roundup Weekend on Friday, Oct. 3,  at 5:45 p.m. in  the Sac N Pac Room at  Bobcat Stadium. Following the reception and beginning at 7:30 pm, the San Marcos Rattlers’ football team will take on New Braunfels Canyon.

The seven new inductees into the San Marcos High School Hall of Fame join honorees from previous years  including Dr. Gwen K. Smith, ‘33; Handler Smith, ‘53; Ross King, ‘54; Walter “Bud” Burnett, ‘56; Virginia Cox Witte, ‘56; Harry Max Reasoner, ‘56; Dolores Crittendon, ‘56; Joyce Able, ‘58; Bill Pennington, ‘60; John Diaz, ‘61; Dale Linebarger, ‘61; Rusty Phillips, ‘62; Reece Morrison, ‘64; Richard Cruz, ‘65; Frank Arredondo, ‘65; Tricia Tingle, ‘73; Troy Kimmel, ‘75; and Rob Thomas, ‘83.

Other Ratter Roundup activities on tap

On Saturday, Hays County Constable David Peterson (‘74) will fire up the Rattler Roundup  Chili & Fajita Cook-off at Plaza Park on the San Marcos River. The SMHS Class of 1983 will try to hang onto their title as they compete as returning champs. Also on tap for Saturday morning is the Alumni Golf Tournament with the class of 1969 holding the title of returning champs. Both of these events  open to all alumni and the public, and each will have special awards limited to teams made up of individuals from the same graduating class.

Additionally on Saturday, the SMHS Alumni Association and the Hill Country Restaurant  Association will cohost the  2008 “Taste of the Hill Country” event at Plaza Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to sample foods from several of San Marcos’ favorite eating establishments. During this event  free live music will include country chart-toppers, The Derailers; American Idol contender Sundance Head; and local favorites Rabb & the Killa Hogs.

Saturday night  the Annual Alumni Dinner and Dance will be held in two locations, similar to last year, The graduating classes from the 1950’s – 1975 will celebrate at the Texas State University Student Center Ballroom where honored classes will include 1963, 1968 and 1973. Across town at the San Marcos Activity Center, the classes of 1976 through 2008 will celebrate. Honored classes at the Activity Center will  include 1978, 1983 and 1988. Everyone is welcome to attend either celebration regardless of your class year but advanced registration is required. See the website for details on all events.
