Drowning at Dudley Johnson Park

On Sunday, September 14, 2008, at approximately 4:00pm, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a possible drowning at Dudley Johnson Park, also known as Five Mile Dam located at 4444 S. Old Stagecoach just south of Kyle.Units from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Kyle Fire Department, and San Marcos/Hays County EMS responded and Firefighters located the victim in about 8 feet of water.

Witnesses said the victim had been canoeing and was in a large pool of water. He got out of the canoe to walk to shore when he apparently stepped off into deeper water. He began flailing around and yelling for help but by the time someone got to him, he had gone under and could not be located.

The victim was a male in his mid twenties who had no identification. A friend who was on the scene knew him only by a nickname.

Justice of the Peace Beth Smith arrived on the scene and the victim was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiners Office.

Investigation continues.
