Taking one final tune-up before the District 17-4A schedule, the San Marcos Rattlers went to Lampasas Friday night, when most people were watching Hurricane Ike coverage on television, and notched a 41-13 victory.
The Rattlers breezed through the game, taking a 20-0 lead before Lampasas dented the scoreboard in the second quarter. Running back Joekavva Yzaguirre scored two touchdowns and four other Rattler runners found the end zone.
San Marcos rushed for 390 yards while raising its record to 2-1. The young San Marcos defense, battered by injuries in the opening weeks, turned in a star performance with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
Kristian Cogdill led San Marcos with 77 rushing yards, followed by Yzaguirre with 65 and Scooter Walker with 63.
The Rattlers will take the next week off to rest bodies, heal injuries and assess their progress before launching into the District 17-4A schedule on Sept. 26 against Cibolo Steele.
