Memorial Slated for Donna Bellion, Friend of the Animals

The San Marcos Animal Shelter and many human and furry friends will celebrate the life of the late Donna Bellion, benefactor to animals, at a special memorial Saturday, September 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at City Park.

Bellion’s two-legged and four-legged friends are invited to attend the event at the City Park Recreation Hall.

Bellion, who died in July, was the founder of the Guardian Angel program at the San Marcos Animal Shelter and co-founder of the “Mutt Strutt,” an annual fund-raiser to benefit neglected and abandoned animals.

“Donna Bellion will long be remembered for her work with animals,” said Mark Brinkley, Director of Environmental Health. “She served on the Animal Shelter Advisory Board for six years, working for changes to our animal ordinance, increasing the number animals adopted through the Guardian Angel shelter adoption program, providing health services to adopted animals, plus the Mutt Strutt community walk, River Pub Bow Wow Bistro and Santa Paws fundraising events.”

Her service to the community and animals continued through her work at the annual Rabies Clinic, San Marcos Spay Days, Pet Fest, Dog Park, and speaking at City Hall and Commissioners Court on behalf of animals.

She shared her passion with others for animal welfare, shelter adoption outreach, rescue, spay/neuter and improvements and expansion at the animal shelter. Her business as the “Critter Sitter” often had her caring for large animals like horses, sheep, goats and even a hybrid wolf.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Mutt Strutt Guardian Angel Adoption Program and received through Mutt Strutt, or San Marcos Animal Services, 750 River Road.

“Without Donna, there is a huge hole in our hearts and we now will work harder to try and fill the gap she leaves and continue her efforts for the animals,” Brinkley said.

  1. I was not aware and am so sorry to hear about Donna’s passing. She was a very nice and genuine part of the fabric that is San Marcos. I will miss her and hope her friends and aquaintances will remember her kindly and come to the park Saturday.

  2. Because of the threat of severe weather, I have been informed that the celebration of Donna’s life has been postponed for one week. It will happen near where the Lion’s rent tubes.

  3. I would like to pay my respects by saying that she was a very sweet lady and made people feel warm whenever they were around her. She gave me my best friend as a gift. Best friend being a dog named Jack. Thank you to all the people who are supporting her memory and showing respect.
