City Council Preview: September 2, 2008

Wonder World Extension Groundbreaking at 4 p.m.

The City of San Marcos will break ground on the Wonder World Drive extension at 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 2 at 2102 Hunter Road. Because of the groundbreaking, Mayor Susan Narvaiz’s usual first Tuesday coffee has been cancelled, as well as presentation of proclamations at 5:30 p.m.

Workshop on Water/ Wastewater Rate Increase

The City Council will hold a workshop at 6 p.m. to discuss a proposed 5% increase in water and wastewater utility rates. Staff will make a presentation on the need for the rate increase to plan for future capacity. The City Council will vote on the measure on second reading during the regular session starting at 7 p.m.

Second Public Hearing on Tax Rate and Budget Discussion

The City Council will hold a second public hearing on a proposed $0.5302 ad valorem (property) tax rate. The proposed rate is the same as that for the 2007-08 fiscal year and is 1.94% over the effective rate. The public is invited to offer written or oral comments at the hearing. The City Council will also hold a general discussion of the proposed $145.3 million budget during the meeting. Final adoption is slated for September 16, 2008.

Wrecker Service Rates

A proposal to increase the fees charged by wrecker companies for private non-consent tows and for police authorized tows will be considered by the City Council on emergency. Police-authorized tows from accidents and non-accidents would increase to $150, while non-consent tows ordered by private property owners would increase from $60 to $75. Other wrecker service fees would also be increased.
