Fire fighters quickly contained a fire that ignited at the Sac-n-Pac convenience store at Hopkins Street and Ranch Road 12 this evening but the aftermath is flustering traffic on heavily traveled Ranch Road 12.
A police dispatcher said a blaze erupted at one of the station’s gas pumps but major damage was not apparent to passersby. The store’s parking lot was cordoned off at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and police cars closed a lane of traffic at Ranch Road 12. Traffic was being routed around the area.
The store was the first in the Sac-n-Pac chain, which now includes 17 in San Marcos and dozens more in Buda, Kyle, Bastrop, Elgin, New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Geronimo, Maxwell and Fentress.
UPDATE: The fire started when the pump was struck by an 18-wheeler. The cause is under investigation.
I’ve seen both Pac-n-Sac and Sac-n-Pac in the Buda-Kyle-San Marcos area. Competing chains?
I think the two chains are the result of a divorce. Garland Warren kept Sac-N-Pac and his ex got Pac-N-Sac, which doesn’t appear to have been updated or expanded since.
No, no, no. Divorce, yes, but both Garland Warren and former spouse, Janelle Warren still work for the Sac-N-Pac company. Pac-N-Sac was started by former employee of Sac-N-Pac. Guess he couldn’t think of a more creative name.
Thanks for the correction. I should know better than to repeat local lore as fact.
