San Marcos CISD Continues to Make Gains in State Accountability Measures

Bowie Elementary has achieved Exemplary status in the Texas Education Agency school accountability system. The Texas Education Agency released state accountability ratings for districts and schools on Friday, August 1, 2008. Of the eight schools in San Marcos CISD rated through the state accountability system, one, Bowie Elementary, is Exemplary, two, Crockett Elementary and DeZavala Elementary are Recognized, and five, Travis Elementary, Hernandez Intermediate, Goodnight Junior High, Miller Junior High, and San Marcos High School, are Academically Acceptable. “We celebrate Bowie Elementary’s new Exemplary rating and gains made on campuses district-wide as we commit ourselves to continue to strive for gains to move to recognized and to exemplary as a district,” observed Dr. Patty Shafer, superintendent of San Marcos CISD.

San Marcos CISD as a whole has maintained its Academically Acceptable status while demonstrating continued excellence and/or growth in all areas evaluated. Scores in writing remain exemplary. Reading and social studies scores are at recognized status with gains pushing both areas toward exemplary. The district saw substantial gains in math and science; scores in both are in academically acceptable range with math scores rapidly approaching recognized status.

Yolanda Almendarez, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, notes that science is the biggest challenge for the district. “While we saw gains in science scores this year, we still are not where we need to be. Our focus for the upcoming school year will be science as we continue to make progress in all areas.”
