Calling All Bands For A Cause

Hill Country Community MHMR Center for Hays County services is putting on a Band – a – Rama and a Silent Auction to raise funds to purchase items needed to help provide quality services for the individuals They serve. The 1st Annual Shooting Stars’ Band – a – Rama will be held at the Civic Center in San Marcos, Texas. They are asking several bands to participate in this event. It will take place on October 4, 2008, from 12 noon to 12 midnight.

The Scheib Opportunity Center began in 1971 and was established by parents of individuals that needed services. It has grown a great deal since the doors opened. They operated under Austin State School for many years, but 9 years ago the State of Texas created Community Centers which are overseen by a Board of Trustees. They are now under the direction of Hill Country Community MHMR Center, which is a non-profit organization. They serve over 100 Hays county citizens who have a primary diagnosis of Mental Retardation. About 25% of these individuals also have mental health and/or physical disabilities. The majority of the individuals they serve attend day services Monday through Friday. They have four group homes, ten Foster Care homes and the rest of the individuals who reside in the community with their families or in their own home. Seventeen individuals have jobs in our local community.

Their ultimate goal for the individuals they serve is to provide them the best quality of life. They provide the skills training they need to be productive citizens in their community. They provide training to enable them to maintain their home and to improve their daily living skills. They are hoping to raise funds to provide the finest services for the individuals they serve.

Their top goal for the fund raiser is to raise enough money to purchase a van for individuals who use wheelchairs. This is a large need which will enable them to provide transportation to and from day services and to transport individuals into the community.

They would also like to complete renovations at our center. Their old basketball court is in need of being enclosed so the clients can use it all year long. The day center is also in need of tables, chairs, refrigerators, a washer and dryer and they need supplies for the activities and classes they provide. If enough money is raised they would also like to remodel our kitchen area so it can be brought up to date.

The group needs your support. All proceeds from this benefit will go directly for items needed. None of the money raised will go to administrative cost. They are asking businesses to assist them by being a Sponsor, donating items for the Silent Auction or in any way they can assist or support us. Any assistance or support will be greatly appreciated. If you will be able to assist them in this endeavor, please contact Jodie Tate/Area Director or Donna Schoonover/Program Director at 512-392-7104.
