San Marcos Farmer's Market – a fresh alternative

The San Marcos Farmers Market is a locally owned and operated fresh produce market where most of the farmers grow their foods here in San Marcos. The market is operated by the San Marcos/New Braunfels Farmers Market Association, which is a non-profit organization that helps local farmers market their products to consumers.

Many unique items are available at the market, including handmade bread and pastries and homemade soap. Many fruits and vegetables are also available.

One vendor, Cliff Caskey, owns Caskey Orchards in San Marcos and sells all his fresh fruits, vegetables and jam at local farmers markets. He specializes in fresh-picked, tree-ripened freestone peaches and has done so for nearly 31 years. He began by helping out other farmers before starting his own orchard with his wife in 1984.

“We’re not certified as 100% organic, but we probably have the most organic peaches you can find in the state of Texas,” Caskey said.

Caskey Orchards pride themselves on the best quality peaches, along with other fruits and vegetables. According to Caskey, the secret to growing high-quality peaches is to use mulch to improve the soil so healthy trees will grow.

“Some people have their trees growing in a pot, and you just shouldn’t do that,” Caskey said.

Farmers from all over Hays County come to the market to sell their goods every Tuesday from 3-6 PM. The market is located at 204 S. Edward Gary in San Marcos.
