Second place finish in javelin locks up trip to Beijing
EUGENE, Ore. – Former Bobcat Mike Hazle qualified for his first Olympics after placing second in the men’s javelin final with a throw of 248’7″ on his third attempt at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials on Sunday.
Bobby Smith with the Monmouth Track Club won the event with a 249’6″ mark on his fifth throw after Hazle led the event through four of the six throws. Hazle’s last attempt to reclaim the lead resulted in a foul.
Fellow Texas State alum Abby Ruston also was in action Sunday for the women’s shot put finals, where she finished eighth.
The Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China, Aug. 8-24.
