A closer look: San Marcos flood control dams

Five earthen dams on Sink and Purgatory creeks upstream of town hold back flood waters from inundating the city. In 1998, the dams saved San Marcos from the worst of a devastating flood. A closer look at the structures:

  1. I’ve lived here for nearly 11 years now and I didn’t know where some of these are. You can see what I guess is Number 5 from the Rail Road Overpass on Wonder World Drive but before that opened a few years ago you’d drive right by on Hunter and never know it’s there.
