Texas State promotes Henry on women’s basketball staff

Texas State women’s basketball head coach Suzanne Fox announced the promotion of Patrick Henry to Associate Head Coach this week.

Henry will enter his fourth season with the Bobcat women’s basketball program in 2008-09 after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach.

“I would like to thank Coach Fox, Senior Woman Administrator Tracy Shoemake and Athletics Director Dr. Larry Teis for giving me this opportunity to be the Associate Head Coach at Texas State,” Henry said. “I’m incredibly appreciative for the opportunity to contribute in this new role in the development and continued growth of Coach Fox’s vision for our program.”

Said Fox, who is in her 12th year as the Texas State head coach, “Patrick is the person I lean on the most as far as recruiting and the basketball X’s and O’s. He understands the vision I have for our program and how I want to get that accomplished. This is the next natural step for Patrick and his growth as a collegiate coach, and I couldn’t be more excited for him personally and for the student-athletes who will benefit from his expertise.”

As the only holdover on the coaching staff after the 2006-07 season, Henry serves as recruiting coordinator to organize the Bobcats’ efforts in evaluating and prospective student-athletes and is rapidly establishing himself as one of the up-and-coming recruiters in women’s basketball and one of the top recruiters in the Southland Conference.

“The opportunity to continue to work for and learn from one of the brightest and most energetic head coaches in the country and in a place that is as special as Texas State makes transitioning into this role not only an tremendous opportunity but also an incredible honor,” said Henry. “I look forward to helping the program pursue its goals in the future as we continue to build on successes both on and off the court.”

In addition to serving as recruiting coordinator, Henry plays key roles in scouting and game preparation. He also assisted in leading the Texas State women’s basketball program to its first regular season Southland Conference championship and a spot in the second round of the WNIT.

“One of the most underrated things in college basketball is the coaching staffs, which can make or break you in this business,” said Fox. “Head coaches get a lot of the publicity, but my assistants are an integral part of our program. Patrick has played a big part in developing and mentoring new assistant coaches in our program and helping maintain continuity.”

Henry came to Texas State from Mercer University, where he spent three years as an assistant coach and helped the Bears to an Atlantic Sun Conference title and a record turnaround that still stands atop the NCAA charts. Before Henry’s arrival, Mercer went 6-23 but reversed its record to 23-6 in Henry’s first season on campus.

He also worked for a year as an administrative assistant on the men’s basketball staff at Georgia Southern and has experience working at all three NCAA Division levels throughout his coaching career. Henry has worked under four national coaches of the year and has been part of four separate staffs that have won or shared a conference championship.

Henry was also a two-year letter winner at Ohio University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1998. Henry also received his Master’s in Education from Mercer in 2005.
