Texas State women take second at SLC meet

HUNTSVILLE – The Texas State women’s track and field team scored 148.50 points and won four events to finish in second place at the Southland Conference Championships May 9-11.

Rebekah Vickers won the women’s pole vault after clearing 12 feet, 7½ inches and Alaysha Ford won the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided jump of 39 feet, 5¼ inches Sunday. Valerie Hancock won the women’s high jump after clearing 5 feet, 8 ¾ inches on Saturday, after Tenley Determan won the women’s 10,000 meters with a time of 38:24.07 Friday night.

In the men’s division, Jonathan Ochoa won the javelin with a throw of 208 feet, 4 inches, leading Texas State to a sixth place finish with 75 points. Michael Webley was the runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.90, and Kemuel Morales finished second in the men’s shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 1½ inches. Gatis Spunde finished in third place with a time of 51.38 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.

Iris Darrington registered fourth-place finishes in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes with a legal time of 11.81 seconds in the 100 meters and a wind-aided 23.90 seconds in the 200 meters. Jasmine Walls of Texas-Arlington won both races.

Texas State’s Liat Anav also finished in fourth place with a time of 1:03.36 in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, just ahead of teammate Crystyne Hatfield’s fifth-place time of 1:03.75. Texas State also posted a third-place time of 3:49.03 in the women’s 4×400-meter relay.

In addition to Vickers winning the pole vault, Jennifer Matthews had a fourth-place vault, clearing 12 feet, 1½ inches. Ashley Austin finished third in the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided mark of 39 feet, 3¾ inches. In the women’s discus, Katie Hanie was the runner-up with a throw of 147 feet, 10 inches, while Jiovanna Martinez finished in fourth place with a throw of 142 feet, 7 inches.

Kellie Van Vleet finished third in the women’s javelin with a throw of 129 feet, 5 inches, while Danete Wright finished fourth in the women’s heptathlon with 4,708 points.

In the men’s pole vault, Dmitri Kabakov finished in fourth place, clearing 16 feet, ¾ inches on his second try, while Casey Cummings finished in fifth place after clearing the same height on his third attempt. Jarrod Buddin finished in sixth place after clearing 15 feet, 7 inches.

Kabakov also finished in fifth place after scoring 5,992 points in the men’s decathlon.
