‘Pack It Up and Pass It On’ seeks volunteers

From Texas State University

Pack It Up and Pass It On, the annual Texas State University recycling program that allows students to leave behind items they no longer need to benefit needy San Marcos residents, kicks off this week.

Last year, residence hall students filled five PODS with thousands of useful items that more than 1,000 clients from United Way of Hays County agencies and other organizations selected from as they “shopped” for free in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom.

The program not only recycles useful items, it reduces the university¹s waste stream and dumpster diving at the end of the semester.

Faculty, staff, departments, divisions, and community groups are asked to consider “adopting” a residence hall! All you have to do is visit “your” hall once a day from April 30 – May 12, bag items that students leave in the Pack It Up barrels in the lobbies and transport them to a storage POD near the hall for safekeeping until sorting begins.

More volunteers will be needed on May 19 through 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help sort items at the LBJ Student Center Ballroom, the location of the shopping event. Volunteers are also needed May 22 from 7 a.m. to noon, during the distribution. Community service documentation is provided.

If you have items to donate, you can bring them to the ballroom on May 19 through 21 between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No pick-up assistance is available, but we will help you unload them at the ballroom.

Donated items accepted include clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, electronics, unopened toiletries, non-perishable food, computers and books. Visit www.txstate.edu/community for more information about the Adopt-A-Hall program and to see pictures from previous Pack It Up programs call the Office of Community Relations at 245-9645 or email communityrelations@txstate.edu.

  1. Awesome program. I’ll be submitting a time off request tomorrow, so I can take a day to help out.
