The Kiwanis Club of San Marcos honored several DeZavala Elementary School students during their weekly meeting Thursday. The students are members of K-Kids, a student-led community service organization, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body. The K-Kids are the youngest and fastest growing service organization for elementary students worldwide. The club is ideally suited for students in grades 1 through 5 (ages 6 to 12).
The group from DeZavala is sponsored at their school by Jil Carrejo and Danielle McCollum. The students recognized at the meeting were Joe Merchant, Kendall Walker, Madison Lansing, Eric Rodriguez, and David Hamilton.
Merchant said, ‘I like to clean up around my school and I like to give back. I really like these activities.”
Jil Carrejo accepted a one hundred dollar check from the Kiwanis for her personal work with the kids this year. Kiwanis has donated four hundred dollars to the K-Kids this year.
Kiwanis member Tracy Herman, Community Relations Director at Merrill Gardens said, “The best thing about having K-Kids is watching them learn to give and serve people who are less fortunate than they are. The kids are always proud of themselves and excited to be involved.”
The students gave back to the community this year by collecting food for the homeless, picking up trash around DeZavala and they sent letters to residents of a local assisted living. The group has plans for a future community service outing with the local animal shelter.
