Brian McCoy, president and chief executive officer of San Marcos-based McCoy’s Building Supply was honored this week by a trade group for his contributions to the lumber industry.

McCoy was named the 2008 “Lumberman of the Year” by the Lumberman’s Association of Texas.

“We are thrilled to be part of the supply chain that provides building products for the homes of Texas families,” McCoy said in a written statement. “Our dedicated employees are committed to serving our customers, and our suppliers are a huge support in the process.”

Started in 1927 as a contract roofing company in Houston, McCoy’s has evolved from a small, one-store operation into an expansive regional corporation, employing more than 2,000 people and operating 85 stores in five states, including Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. McCoy said the company’s policy of closing its stores on Sundays is important part of the business’ character.

“I love our ‘Always Closed Sundays’ policy. Our employees can depend on one day a week for worship and time with their families. We know we miss some business in the process, but we have many customers that shop with us precisely because we are closed on Sunday,” McCoy said.

Brian McCoy’s father, Emmett McCoy, was the lumberman group’s honoree in 1980.
