From staff reports
The rash of fires that broke out east of San Marcos was likely caused by a utility trailer being pulled along Staples Road as it threw off sparks that ignited dry grass, a sheriffs spokesperson said.
Deputy Pam Robinson said the four fires burned a total of about 650 acres including two sheds. The last of them was extinguished about 9 p.m. Friday, Robinson said.
About 50 homes in the River Hills subdivision were evacuated but the residences were saved, in some cases, with few feet to spare. Fire fighters from every department in Hays and Guadalupe counties responded, including the San Marcos and South Hays fire departments.

You should be asking the fire department about this, not the Sheriff’s office, especially considering this explanation is entirely contrary to statements of witnesses and the fire department. What is the point of this article?
