Buda filings flying

BUDA – Less than a week into the filing period for city council races, the people of Buda need not fear. Each of four seats up for election has at least one official candidate, meaning a council expanded to seven members will be full after the May 10 election.

The only contested election, so far, involves Place 1 Councilmember Bobby Lane, the mayor pro tem, and Place 2 Councilmember Hutch White, both of whom have announced that they’re running for mayor. Lane has officially filed, while White had not filed as of Wednesday evening, though he re-iterated that intention that night.

Former Buda Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) Chairman Ron Fletcher has filed to run for Lane’s seat, a two-year term that will expire in 2010. Fletcher also served recently on a city committee that wrote the home rule charter.

Kelly Allen, who might be positioned as the Buda Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) candidate, is running for the seat vacated by White, which also runs for two years. A member of the BACC Board of Directors, Allen received the endorsement of BACC President Dick Schneider, who said at Wednesday’s chamber lunch, “We need to elect this girl.”

Buda resident Todd Ruge, an unknown in community affairs, filed to run for the new seat, called Place 6, which carries a three-year term until 2011. Ruge, who has lived in Buda for two years, lists his occupation as operator/trainer at Freescale.

Filing for city elections began this week and continues through March 10.
