Texas State women remain hottest team in Southland

THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas State (10-7, 4-0) women’s basketball team is now 4-0 in Southland Conference play with a 80-66 victory over the Lady Colonels from Nicholls State (3-12, 1-3 ) on Saturday at Stopher Gym. The ‘Cats are off to their best start since they began conference play with a 7-0 record in the 2004-05 season .

The Bobcats once again started off hot as they began the game on a 10-2 run. Not surprisingly, they were led by their 5’9” guard from Coppell High School, Joyce Ekworomadu. Ekworomadu finished the game with 23 points (4 of 6 3-point shooting) and 6 rebounds. With her 4 three pointers, Texas State tied their season high with 10 three pointers made (10 of 21 — 47.6%). The Lady Colonels stayed close in the 1st half until the Bobcats took off on a 14-3 run to take a 32-18 lead. The half ended with Texas State leading 46-31. The key stat for the 1st half was field goal percentage. Nicholls State made 10 of 29 shots (34.5%) while the Bobcats made 18 of 34 (52.9%).

The ‘Cats 2nd half lead never fell below 13 and they led by as many as 20 points until they finally settled for their 80-66 victory. For the game, the Lady Colonels were held to just 36 percent shooting (23 of 64). Aimee Hilburn (13 pts, 5 rebs), Tamarra Evans-Sluga (13 pts), Marie Moser (5 pts, 7 rebs) and Brooke DeGrate (5 rebs, 2 ast) joined Ekworomadu as the stat leaders for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will finish up their three-game road trip on Thursday against the Islanders from Texas A&M Corpus Christi (6-10, 3-0). This will be a pivotal Southland Conference West Division battle as both teams are undefeated in conference play. UT Arlington is the other undefeated team in the Western Division (9-6, 4-0).
