HAMMOND, LA – Texas State’s Joyce Ekworomadu proved that her being voted the Southland Conference Player of the Week last week was no fluke. She scored 26 points, recorded 7 rebounds (3 offensive) and had 2 steals in the Bobcats (9-7, 3-0) 70-52 victory over the Lady Lions from Southeastern Louisiana (7-9, 1-2) Thursday night at University Center.
The ‘Cats scored first and never gave up the lead as Ekworomadu and Victoria Davis (10 pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assist and 7 steals) scored the teams first 15 points. Brooke DeGrate also had a solid game with 5 rebounds, 5 assist and 4 steals. Texas State led by as many as 10 points in the 1st half on their way to a 27-19 halftime lead. They did not let up in the 2nd half as the Bobcats opened up with an 18-5 run and stretched the lead to 22 points. The Bobcats outscored the Lions 43-33 in the half.
Texas State entered the game as the highest scoring offense in the league with 75.7 points per game and dominated the stat sheet. The Bobcats made 12-14 free throws (85.7%), outrebounded the Lions 42-29, scored 26 points off turnovers and had 15 fast break points to none for Southeastern Louisiana.
Texas State remains perfect in Southland Conference play with a 3-0 record and will be traveling to Nicholls State (3-11, 1-2 SLC) to play the Lady Colonels Saturday at 2 p.m.
