SAN MARCOS – The Texas State Bobcats (8-8, 1-2) mens basketball team lost a heartbreaker in their Southland Conference home opener, 84-83 to the Lions from Southeastern Louisiana (10-6, 2-1) Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.
The Bobcats fell behind early and trailed by 9 points at halftime 45-36 as Southeastern Louisiana shot 74% from the field. In the 2nd half the Lions extended their lead to 60-46 but Texas State rallied and got within 2 points 4 times in the final 4:19. Southeastern Louisiana shot 17-for-34 from the free throw line but made three free throws in the final 22 seconds, including a pair with 8.4 seconds left that put the Lions ahead, 84-80. Brent Benson (3pts) knocked in a three pointer, but time ran out on the ‘Cats who fell to 1-2 in district play.
Brandon Bush led the Bobcats in scoring and rebounding (19 pts and 9 rebounds) while Chris Agwumaro (13 pts in only 13 minutes) and Dylan Moseley (12 points) also had great games. Texas State, who came into the game ranked 6th in the Nation in scoring (85.6 pts/game), once again struggled at the free throw line (13 of 23 for 56.6%) outscored Southeastern, 47-39 in the second half.
Texas State will try to even their conference record Saturday at home against Nicholls State (6-12, 1-2). This game will be the 2nd of 3 straight Southland Conference home contests for the Bobcats.
